The Calvary

The Calvary

The actual structure is unique of its kind, with a central body and two semicircular side wings. It has eighteen panels representing fourteen of the stations of Via Crucis and four of Via Lucis.

The Calvary is a sacred place in a town. In San Cataldo, during Holy Week, the misteries are staged. During the 19th century the Calvary was situated on a cave that also served as church. Then a new place was chosen and a chapel was erected and three crosses were put up. The actual structure is unique of its kind, with a central body and two semicircular side wings. Eighteen panels representing fourteen of the stations of Via Crucis and four of Via Lucis have been preserved in the chapel for years and they are the result of the mastery of artisans coming from different parts of Italy.

Our Lord of Mistery's church is just opposite the Calvary. It was built in 1770 but it was rebuilt after II World War and was consecrated to St. Francis of Assisi and recently it was consecrated to Christ Crucified. The style is simple, the bell tower is bare of bell.
